Influenza commonly known as flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The infection results in the person getting fever, cough, headache, and malaise (tired, no energy); some people also may develop a sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Influenza also lowers the body’s ability to fight off other infections which can lead to pneumonia, bronchitis or other complications.
The influenza virus usually enters the body through mucous membranes in the mouth, nose or eyes. When a person with the flu coughs or sneezes, the virus then becomes airborne and can be inhaled by anyone nearby. The flu virus will usually be prominent during the fall and winter. Influenza (flu) is a contagious viral illness caused by Influenza viruses A and B. Type A is normally responsible for the epidemic that occur annually. These viruses may have different strains, called subtypes, that are different from the original virus but retain some of its characteristics. Strains of influenza virus that cause the flu may differ from year to year.
Many people opt for the flu vaccine every year. To immunize against the flu, we use the homeopathic remedy Influenzinum. Influenzinum is a remedy made from flu viruses, rendered completely safe and non-toxic by a homeopathic pharmacist. A proprietary preparation is produced by Dolisos pharmacy each year using the flu virus strains recommended by the World Health Organization for the year’s vaccine production (Dolivaxil – containing Influenzinum 9C). The typical dosage is once per week for four weeks beginning in October or later, followed by another dose three weeks later. The flu shot and homeopathic Influenzinum are from the same source so covers same virus strains, but homeopathy is safely taken by mouth and not injected and is without preservatives such as mercury.
Influenzinum has been used for at least the past 150 years as a natural flu preventative. In 1998, the French Society of Homeopathy conducted a survey of 23 homeopathic doctors and 453 patients concerning their use of influenzinum as a flu preventative over a 10-year period. Results of the survey were remarkable. In approximately 90 percent of the cases, no instances of the flu occurred when influenzinum was used.
Homeopathy is specifically formulated to stimulate the body’s own defense system to resist the onset of the season’s flu strains. Based on the classical approach of Homeopathy a Homeopathic practitioner looks at the person holistically, that is mind, body and emotion together and not just at the symptoms of the illness. Homeopathic remedies are prescribed according to the Law of Simlia. This law states, “Like cures like .” This means that the symptoms caused by an overdose of a substance are the symptoms that can also be cured by a small dose of that same substance. As an example, we know that when we cut up an onion most people experience an acrid runny nose, soreness in the throat and stinging runny eyes. A homeopath will prescribe Allium Cepa, this is the homeopathic remedy made from the onion for the individual who has a cold and a sore throat with these symptoms. Therefore, homeopathy uses remedies prepared from natural substances that are similar to the illness in contrast to conventional or allopathic medicine, which treats and often suppresses the patient’s symptoms with large amounts of drugs, which then have the opposite effect.
Based on the symptoms, there may be different curative medications for different cases of flu. One or two of these medications will be used more frequently than the others and this can then be given to others as preventive. There are many possible remedies for the flu, depending upon the particular symptoms that the infected person is experiencing. Here I am providing some of the Homeopathic remedies used for Influenza based upon the symptoms.

Prevention of Influenza
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
- Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
